A community built on talents

Matchspace began in 2019 when our founder was looking for somewhere to take cello lessons on his way home from work and realised there was no efficient way to find what he was looking for. Talking to friends who wanted to take music lessons, parents who were looking for music lessons for their children and lots of music professionals who were looking for more freedom in how, where and when they taught, confirmed him in his idea of building a platform to solve these needs. His vision was born: to create the best possible platform to bring people together to share and develop their talents and to make a difference in the world of personal development.

Trusted services

Matchspace helps parents find the right musical instrument for their child, helps students to find the right teacher for their needs, helps teachers to advertise the lessons they can offer, and decide what to charge and manage their bookings and payments easily and securely.

Customer support

We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions about Matchspace in our Help Center. If you have any other questions, please email us.

Everyone who teaches on Matchspace must demonstrate high levels of expertise, a passion for teaching, and the ability to connect with students. It’s free to sign up and list your lesson. The listings available on the site are as diverse as the teachers who list them.

Every lesson or course submitted to Matchspace is reviewed to make sure it meets these three quality standards: expertise, passion for teaching, and connection. Once published, a lesson must continue upholding these standards to ensure that it meets students’ expectations.

  • Expertise: Our teachers are highly skilled and deeply passionate about what they do. They don’t just provide a standardised curriculum, they bring their expertise and experience to life.
  • Passion for teaching: The real difference between a mediocre and an excellent teacher is that the latter brings joy to learning. Our teachers are committed to developing the unique talents of each student. They are creative in coming up with different ways to explain a concept, identify problems quickly and have solutions to help solve those problems, have a strong commitment to fundamentals, are not afraid to challenge students to push themselves, believe that everyone can reach their full potential, use targets and assignments, and make lessons fun.
  • Connection: Teachers are dedicated to creating meaningful human connections. Students will generally learn better if they feel a connection developing with their teacher, whether that’s through humor, showing they care about their development, or making sure they devote their time and enthusiasm to each student and lesson.

Other requirements

All lessons and courses must comply with our Terms of Use. Every lesson and course must meet the following requirements:

Accuracy: Teachers must provide complete and accurate information about their profile, their listing (such as course description, location and calendar availability) and any other relevant information requested by Matchspace. Teachers are responsible for ensuring that their listing information (including calendar availability) is current at all times.

Commitment to bookings: Teachers must honor all booked lessons and Matchspace’ cancellation policy.

Listings that don’t meet any of the above standards may be removed from Matchspace.

If you don’t have a Matchspace account yet, go to Matchspace and click ‘Sign Up’.

You can sign up using your email address, Facebook account, or Google account. Signing up and creating a Matchspace account is free.

After you sign up, be sure to complete your profile and lesson description. You will be guided through the process step-by-step. See also the three steps described in the section above “Teaching in 3 steps”.

To reset your password

If you’ve forgotten your password or you’re having trouble logging in to your Matchspace account, go to Matchspace and click ‘forgot password’.

Enter the email address you use for Matchspace, then click ‘send me reset link’ and you’ll be e-mailed a link to reset your password.

To change your password

If you know your current password, and you want to change it, follow the same procedure as described under “to reset your password”.

To create a password if you’ve been using Facebook or Google to log in

If you created a Matchspace account by connecting to Facebook or Google, you weren’t required to create a password.

You can continue to log in with Facebook or Google, or if you’d like to create a Matchspace password:

  1. Log out of your Matchspace account
  2. Follow the steps to reset your password

Once you create a Matchspace password, you’ll no longer be able to log in using Facebook or Google. Instead, you use your email and password to log in. However, your Matchspace account will still be connected to Facebook or Google.

This varies according to the duration of your lesson, the city you teach in, your qualifications and whether you teach in a studio or make home visits. We recommend consulting the rates of the Schweizerischer Musikpädagogischer Verband (SMPV) before you set your lesson prices. We take active measures to prevent price dumping and protect our teachers on Matchspace and within the industry.

A good profile is first and foremost genuine, i.e., it is truthful and accurate. Second, it must be relevant, i.e., it covers what a student wants to know in order to understand your teaching philosophy, educational background and practical experience. Third, it should be differentiating, i.e., it describes what makes you and your lessons special and different from other courses. When a student reads your profile and lesson description, they should know what to expect from you and your lessons.

You can work full time or part-time. You define your schedule and how many lessons you wish to teach.

Your course will only show as booked when it is paid for. Also, we protect our teachers from short-notice cancellations or no-shows. Any cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged to the student. Cancellations with more than 24 hours’ notice can be rescheduled at no extra charge.

For any cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice the student will be charged the full lesson price. Cancellations with more than 24 hours’ notice can be rescheduled at no extra charge. Matchspace will credit the student the amount of the lesson fee as Matchspace credit. The credit can be redeemed by the student for future lesson bookings.

‘No-shows’ are treated the same as cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice, i.e. students will be charged the full lesson price.

Matchspace releases your lesson fee 24 hours after a student has taken your lesson. The payment will be processed automatically through the secure payment services of Stripe and credited to the teachers’ bank account provided during the sign up process.

Report requests for offsite payment

If a Matchspace student asks you to pay off site or through another company, report it to us

To report a fraudulent email

If you receive an email from anyone (including an automated@matchspace.com or any other username@matchspace.com email address) asking you to pay or accept payment offsite, let us know immediately.

Types of scams

Always examine emails claiming to be from Matchspace carefully. Never share your email address outside the Matchspace platform.

Examples of common scams include:

  • Advance Fee Scam: Someone offers to pay you, or give you something, if you pay through a service outside of Matchspace.
  • Phishing Scam: Someone sends an email, or link that looks like it’s from Matchspace, or another trusted site. These messages are designed to trick you into providing confidential information such as passwords or other email addresses. Phishing messages may contain malware, which is malicious software that gains access to your computer to gather your personal information, including passwords.
  • Overpayment Scam: Someone offers to pay you more than the price of the lesson, and then asks you to give them cash to cover the difference.
  • Third-Party Booking Scam: Someone offers to reserve and pay for a Matchspace listing through their third-party website or service, often claiming to have a Matchspace coupon or discount. These reservations are typically paid for using stolen credit cards.

Note: Any bookings that are not made through Matchspace violate our Terms of Use. If we identify that a booking was made through a third-party service, we may cancel the booking and deactivate both the teacher’s and the student’s account.

Matchspace charges the teacher a service fee of 16.5%, the lowest fees in the industry. This will be calculated on the basis of the lesson fee and automatically deducted before payment of the lesson fee. The service fee helps us run our platform, advertise the lessons and provide secure, automated payment processing and customer support.

There are two opportunities to earn coupons:

  • Invite a friend: You earn coupons when the friend you invited books a lesson.
  • Refer a teacher: You earn coupons when your referral signs up as a teacher.

Your invited friend or referred teacher will also receive a coupon that can be redeemed against any future lesson booking. To earn coupons, send your friends or teachers a referral link inviting them to join Matchspace. You’ll find the referral links in the main menu of our Matchspace App (‘Invite Friends’ and ‘Refer a Teacher’). Your coupons will show up automatically on the checkout page of any future lesson booking.

If you have a Matchspace coupon you want to use towards a lesson you can redeem it on the checkout page. All your available coupons will show up automatically on the checkout page of any future bookings. Coupons can’t be applied to existing bookings.

When you book a lesson on Matchspace, you’re making arrangements to take a lesson with a teacher at the teacher’s place, at a studio or your own place. Each teacher has their own teaching philosophy, schedule preferences, educational background or practical experience. Read through their profiles or apply search filters to find the right teacher and lesson for your needs and preferences. When unsure about what music instrument suits you best, take our test to find out. Most teachers offer free trial lessons, so you can try out how the lesson works for you before committing to regular lessons. You can book single or recurring lessons. Some teachers also offer courses that consist of a predefined number of lessons.

  1. Complete your profile

Complete your profile before you request a lesson with a teacher, so they can know a little bit about you when they confirm. Your profile should include information about your interest in playing music, your experience level, and what you wish to learn.

  1. Find the right teacher and lesson

With teachers in Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne, and Winterthur (more cities to follow), you’ll want to make sure the teacher and lesson you choose meets your needs and preferences.

When searching for a teacher or lesson, you can either search courses using the search bar, or enter specific search criteria to filter courses that meet your criteria. Read teachers’ profiles, lesson descriptions, or students’ reviews to see if it’s the right fit for you.

  1. Book it!

You’ve found the perfect teacher and lesson, and now it’s time to make it official. You can book single lessons as you go, or book recurring lessons for as many weeks out as available to secure your preferred day and time.

We support different payment methods, which depend on the country your payment account is located in. So, in addition to major credit and debit cards, certain payment options are available in specific countries or on specific platforms (like Apple Pay or Google Pay).

We’ll show you which payment methods are available to you on the checkout page, before you submit a booking request.

Paying through Matchspace guarantees secure payment from students to teachers, protects our students and teachers against short-term cancellations, scams, makes students eligible for refunds, helps us to maintain our services and provide customer support for students and teachers.

Don’t send them money and let us know. We’ll never ask you to pay for anything outside of our site, through email, or through a third-party booker. If you paid for your lesson outside of Matchspace (for example, a wire or bank transfer), you may have paid for a fraudulent booking. To get help, let us know immediately.

Report requests for offsite payment

If a Matchspace teacher on the Matchspace site asks you to pay off site or through another company, report it to us

You won’t receive a paper or PDF invoice from a teacher or Matchspace asking you for payment. If a teacher uses any of these terms, report them: direct payment, cash payment, or wire transfer.

To report an email

If you receive an email from anyone (including an automated@matchspace.com or any other username@matchspace.com email address) asking you to pay or accept payment offsite, let us know immediately.

Most teachers on Matchspace offer a free trial lesson to experience the lesson and get to know each other before committing to recurring lessons or courses.

If you need to make a change to a confirmed lesson, you can submit a reschedule request to your teacher.

To reschedule a lesson:

  1. In the Matchspace app, go to Appointments and choose your lesson.
  2. Tap Edit Appointment and select Reschedule.
  3. Tap on New Date and select the date you want to reschedule for (only available slots will be visible).
  4. Select action to perform when the other party rejects the change.
  5. Tap on Finalize Request to inform the teacher about your reschedule request.

If you cancel a lesson, your refund amount is determined by Matchspace’ cancellation policy.

Any cancellation within less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged to the student at full lesson price. Cancellations with more than 24 hours’ notice can be rescheduled at no extra charge. Matchspace will credit the amount of the lesson fee due to the student as Matchspace credit. The credits can be redeemed by the student for future lesson bookings.

‘No-shows’ are treated the same as cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice, i.e. students will be charged the full lesson price.

If your lesson is canceled by your teacher, we’ll automatically give you a full refund. You’ll receive an email confirming the full refund with a link to check on the status. You can always contact us if you need further help.
